Fleet & Transportation Compliance
- CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration)
- Mandatory Ontario registration for operators of commercial vehicles over 4,500 kg. CVOR number must be displayed on both sides of the vehicle in contrasting 2"+ lettering. Fines for non-display: $200-1,000.
- CVOR Certificate
- Document proving active CVOR status. Must be carried in vehicle at all times. Renewal: annually or bi-annually depending on fleet size.
- CVOR Safety Rating
- MTO assigns Excellent, Satisfactory, Conditional, or Unsatisfactory ratings based on carrier performance. Affects insurance rates and contract eligibility.
- GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight)
- Total weight of vehicle plus load. Vehicles with GVW over 4,500 kg require CVOR in Ontario.
- MTO (Ministry of Transportation Ontario)
- Provincial body regulating all transportation in Ontario. Enforces CVOR, driver licensing, vehicle safety standards.
- NSC (National Safety Code)
- Federal safety standard for commercial vehicles operating across provincial borders. Ontario enforces NSC through CVOR system.
- USDOT Number
- US Department of Transportation registration. Required for ANY commercial vehicle crossing into the US. Must be displayed on vehicle door in 2"+ lettering.
- MC Number (Motor Carrier)
- FMCSA operating authority number. Required in addition to USDOT for carriers transporting regulated commodities across US state lines.
- Annual Inspection
- Mandatory yearly safety inspection for all commercial vehicles in Ontario. Yellow sticker must be displayed showing inspection date.
- Cab Card
- Vehicle registration document that must be carried in the cab. Shows registered weight, plate number, and CVOR number.
Boat & Marine Compliance
- Transport Canada Registration Number
- Required for all pleasure craft over 7.5 kW (10 HP). Must be displayed on both sides of bow in 7.5 cm+ (3") block letters in contrasting colour.
- Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL)
- Free licence for boats with motors. Number must be displayed on both sides of the bow. Valid for 10 years.
- PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operator Card)
- Mandatory operator competency card for all boaters in Canada. Required since 2009.
- Small Vessel Regulations
- Transport Canada regulations governing safety equipment, registration marking, and operation of vessels under 24m.
Business & Accessibility Compliance
- AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act)
- Ontario law requiring businesses to identify, remove, and prevent barriers for people with disabilities. Affects signage, websites, customer service.
- SFOA (Smoke-Free Ontario Act)
- Prohibits smoking in enclosed workplaces and public places. Requires no-smoking signage at all entrances. Signage specs: international no-smoking symbol, bilingual text.
- WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board)
- Ontario workplace insurance provider. Many commercial clients require proof of WSIB coverage from contractors. Display your WSIB number on vehicles and marketing.
- Business Number (BN)
- 9-digit CRA identifier for all Canadian businesses. Required for GST/HST, payroll, and import/export accounts.
- HST (Harmonized Sales Tax)
- Ontario's 13% combined federal+provincial sales tax. Must be included in advertised prices or clearly shown as additional.
Signage Compliance
- By-law Signage
- Municipal regulations governing sign size, placement, illumination, and setbacks. Varies by municipality — check local by-laws before installing.
- MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices)
- Standard for all traffic signs and road markings in Ontario. Construction zone signage must comply.
- Reflective Sheeting
- High-visibility material required for road signs and some commercial vehicle markings. Grades: Engineering (Type I), High-Intensity (Type III), Diamond (Type XI).
