Hard Hat Requirements in Ontario

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and CSA Z94.1, all construction workers in Ontario must wear approved head protection. As of 2024-2026, major general contractors are mandating Type 2 Class E helmets for enhanced protection.

⚠️ Key Change for 2026: EllisDon, PCL, and Bird Construction now require Type 2 hard hats (side impact protection) on all sites. Type 1 helmets may be rejected at gate.

Type 2 vs Type 1 Hard Hats

Feature Type 1 Type 2 (Recommended)
Impact Protection Top only Top + Side
Major GC Acceptance Being phased out Required
CSA Standard Z94.1 Z94.1 (lateral)
Cost $15-30 $40-80

Hard Hat Sticker Rules

Stickers on hard hats are permitted but must meet specific requirements:

  • βœ… Non-metallic β€” Metallic stickers affect electrical protection rating
  • βœ… Vinyl material β€” Won't damage shell integrity
  • βœ… No adhesive damage β€” Use "safety-safe" adhesives
  • βœ… No coverage of defects β€” Stickers can't hide cracks or damage
  • ❌ No paint β€” Paint can degrade shell material
