Mark an approved private fire route with a clear reflective sign built from the municipality's current face and placement requirements. Start with the city and the approved route details, then choose the package that matches the number of signs and mounting work.

A sign does not create a fire route

Ontario's Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997, section 7.1 allows municipalities to designate private roads as fire routes and prohibit parking on them. The municipality's application, approval, by-law or designated-route process establishes that authority. Buying and posting a sign by itself does not designate a route or create ticketing, towing or impounding authority.

There is no single Ontario sign layout

Municipal schedules control the symbol, wording, colour, by-law number, arrow direction, spacing and mounting height. Ottawa, for example, generally specifies a minimum 45 cm by 30 cm bilingual face with arrows, approved locations no more than 25 m apart and a lower edge 2.0 m to 2.5 m above ground. Toronto uses its own Chapter 880 and Schedule B, including approved-route status, intervals no greater than 30 m and different mounting limits. Those city examples must not be copied as an Ontario-wide template.

Review the current Ottawa Fire Routes By-law Schedule B and Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 880 only when they apply to the property. For another municipality, use that municipality's current source.

Current product format and packages

  • 12 x 18-inch reflective aluminium sign format in the current product configuration.
  • Sign Only - $119.99.
  • Sign + Post Kit - $234.99.
  • Sign + Professional Installation - $379.99; confirm local service scope and approved placement before ordering.
  • 6-Pack Contractor Special - $624.99 for multiple approved placements using the same confirmed face.

The product photos show a generic NO PARKING FIRE ROUTE face. They are not proof of municipal approval. A TOW AWAY message also does not create removal authority; the local by-law may require a separate notice, contact number or enforcement process.

What to confirm before ordering

  1. Confirm that the private road or access route is approved or designated by the municipality.
  2. Obtain the current municipal sign schedule or approved site-plan detail.
  3. Confirm the exact wording, symbol, arrows, by-law number, quantity, locations, spacing and mounting height.
  4. Enter the municipality and source details in the product intake, then choose the matching package.

Choose the package after the municipal check

Use Sign Only when approved mounting is already arranged, add the post kit when the confirmed placement needs one, select installation only after site scope is confirmed, or use the six-pack for a multi-location plan. Complete the municipal check first, then order the physical sign package your approved route requires.
