Ontario Compliance & Signage: Complete Resource Centre

Ontario has some of the most specific signage and compliance requirements in Canada. This resource centre covers every regulation, product, and guide you need — from CVOR truck lettering to boat registration numbers to construction site signs.

CVOR Compliance

Every commercial motor vehicle registered in Ontario with a gross weight or registered gross weight over 4,500 kg must display a valid CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration) number. The number must be displayed on both sides of the vehicle in letters at least 50 mm (2 inches) high, in a contrasting colour to the vehicle body.

Our CVOR number decals are printed on 3M reflective or premium vinyl, cut to regulation specifications, and ship same-day from Niagara Region.

DOT & USDOT Number Requirements

Ontario carriers crossing into the United States must display a valid USDOT number on both sides of every power unit. The number must be in letters at least 2 inches high, in a colour that contrasts with the vehicle background. FMCSA regulations require the legal name or trade name, USDOT number, and MC number (if applicable) to be permanently displayed.

We produce USDOT-compliant vinyl lettering that meets all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requirements, printed on durable outdoor vinyl rated for 7+ years.

Boat Registration Numbers

All pleasure craft in Canada must be licensed or registered. Transport Canada requires licence numbers to be displayed on both sides of the bow in block characters at least 75 mm (3 inches) high, in a colour contrasting with the hull. The characters must be maintained in a legible condition at all times.

Our boat registration number decals are made from marine-grade vinyl that withstands UV, salt water, and freshwater environments. Available in standard black, white, and custom colours.

Construction Site Signs

Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and municipal by-laws require construction sites to display specific signage. This includes project identification boards, safety warning signs, pedestrian detour signs, and site-specific hazard notices. Most municipalities require project boards showing the permit number, contractor name, and project description.

We produce construction signs on weather-resistant coroplast, aluminum, and MDO (Medium Density Overlay) board. Available in standard sizes from 18x24 to 4x8 feet.

Vehicle Lettering & Graphics

Commercial vehicle lettering in Ontario serves both regulatory compliance (CVOR, DOT) and marketing purposes. Ontario does not require general commercial vehicle lettering beyond CVOR/DOT, but most municipalities require business identification on commercial vehicles operating within city limits.

Fire Safety & Building Code Signage

Ontario's Fire Code (O. Reg. 213/07) and the Ontario Building Code mandate specific signage in commercial and multi-residential buildings. Required signs include fire route signs, occupancy load signs, exit signs, fire extinguisher location signs, and floor identification signs in stairwells. All signs must meet size, colour, and placement specifications outlined in the codes.

Our fire safety signs are printed on rigid aluminum or PVC substrates with reflective options for low-light visibility, meeting Ontario Fire Code specifications.

AODA Signage Requirements

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requires businesses and organizations to meet accessibility standards, including signage. Key requirements include accessible entrance signs, service counter signs, accessible washroom signs, and wayfinding signs. Signs must meet contrast, font size, and placement standards outlined in the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (O. Reg. 191/11).

Braille and tactile signage may be required in some contexts. Our AODA-compliant signs meet all provincial accessibility standards.

Municipal By-Laws & Sign Permits

Every municipality in Ontario has its own sign by-law governing size, placement, illumination, and type of signs permitted. Before installing any exterior signage, check with your local municipal planning department. Common requirements include:

  • Sign permits: Most permanent signs require a permit. Temporary signs (A-frames, banners) often have separate regulations.
  • Size restrictions: Maximum sign face area varies by zone (commercial, industrial, residential).
  • Setbacks: Signs must be a minimum distance from property lines and roadways.
  • Illumination: Rules about internally-lit, externally-lit, and LED signs vary by municipality.
  • Heritage districts: Extra restrictions in heritage conservation areas (common in Niagara-on-the-Lake, parts of St. Catharines).

Frequently Asked Questions

What size do CVOR numbers need to be on my truck?

MTO requires CVOR numbers to be at least 50 mm (approximately 2 inches) high, displayed on both sides of the vehicle, in a colour that contrasts with the vehicle body.

Do I need both a CVOR and USDOT number?

If you only operate within Ontario, you need a CVOR number. If you cross into the United States, you also need a USDOT number and potentially an MC number. Both must be displayed on the vehicle.

What material should I use for boat registration numbers?

Marine-grade vinyl is the standard. It resists UV, salt water, and freshwater. Our boat number decals are rated for 7+ years of outdoor marine exposure.

Do I need a sign permit in Ontario?

Most permanent exterior signs require a municipal sign permit. Requirements vary by municipality. Contact your local planning department before installation. Temporary signs like A-frames and banners may have separate rules.
